Comparing the strength of f.c.c. and b.c.c. sub-micrometer pillars: Compression experiments and dislocation dynamics simulations

چکیده
We compare mechanical strength of f.c.c. gold and b.c.c. molybdenum single crystal pillars of sub-micrometer diameter in uniaxial compression ests. Both crystals show an increase of flow stress with decreasing diameter, but the change is more pronounced in Au than in Mo. The ratio etween the observed maximum flow stress and the theoretical strength is much larger in Au pillars than in Mo pillars. Dislocation dynamics imulations also reveal different dislocation behavior in these two metals. While in a f.c.c. crystal a dislocation loop nucleated from the surface imply moves on its glide plane and exits the pillar, in a b.c.c. crystal it can generate multiple new dislocations due to the ease of screw dislocations o change slip planes. We postulate that this difference in dislocation behavior is the fundamental reason for the observed difference in the plastic eformation behavior of f.c.c. and b.c.c. pillars.

On the basis of the pseudopotential plane-wave(PP-PW) method in combination with the local-density-functional theory(LDFT), complete stress-strain curves for the uniaxial loading and uniaxial deformation along the [001] and [111] directions, and the biaxial proportional extension along [010] and [001] of aluminium are obtained. During the uniaxial loading, certain general behaviors of energy ve...

Extensive Monte-Carlo simulations were performed to evaluate the excess number of clusters and the crossing probability function for three-dimensional percolation on the simple cubic (s.c.), face-centered cubic (f.c.c.), and bodycentered cubic (b.c.c.) lattices. Systems L × L × L′ with L′ >> L were studied for both bond (s.c., f.c.c., b.c.c.) and site (f.c.c.) percolation. The excess number of ...
متن کاملSize dependence of mechanical properties of gold at the micron scale in the absence of strain gradients
Classical laws of mechanics hold that mechanical properties are independent of sample size; however, results of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that crystals exhibit strong size effects at the sub-micron scale. In experimental studies, the size effect can be explained by strain gradients. Atomistic simulations suggest that the yield strength depends on the size even with...

:האצרהה ריצקת להל Understanding dislocation nucleation is essential to control plasticity of defect-free specimen. Free surfaces in metallic materials become increasingly important as the dimensions are minimized into the sub-micrometer scale. Understanding the plasticity and strength of crystalline materials in terms of the dynamics of microscopic defects has been a goal of materials research in the last 70 years. The size-dependent yield stress observed in recent experiments of submicrometer metallic pillars provides a unique opportunity to test our theoretical models, allowing the predictions from defect dynamics simulations to be...
